Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex genetic, hormonal, metabolic and reproductive disorder affecting up to 5 to 13 % of women of childbearing age. In a woman with the condition, two hormones – insulin and androgens (male hormones) – are produced at higher levels, which results in:

  • Irregular periods
  • Emotional problems (anxiety, depression, mood changes or low selfesteem)
  • Unwanted hair growth
  • Hair loss, acne
  • Infertility
  • Weight gain
  • Risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and endometrial cancer
  • Not all women with PCOS will have the same signs and symptoms. Symptoms can also change with age.
