Many individuals or couples can be treated with Basic Fertility treatment measures. However, when these measures fail or in circumstances in which they are not appropriate, in vitro fertilization (IVF) may become necessary.

In a nutshell, IVF is a method of assisted reproduction in which sperm and egg are combined in a laboratory setting to allow fertilization and embryo development outside of the body with subsequent transfer of the embryo back into the uterus.

What Is IVF?:

The three simple letters, IVF, may just look like a random bunch of letters, but to a couple struggling to have a baby, IVF treatment means hope. It’s a potential at life and at parenting a child. Scientifically, IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilization. It is a technique that takes place in a medical doctor visit and a lab.

Who needs IVF:

IVF is usually the treatment of choice

  • In woman with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
  • when a male has extremely compromised sperm count or quality or is producing no sperm at al (Azospermia)l, including those who have had prior vasectomies.
  • IVF helps women to conceive are infertile due to endometriosis.
  • Women with so-called unexplained infertility who fails to conceive with basic measures.
  • women with recurrent pregnancy loss and previously failed IVF cycles require IVF to allow for comprehensive chromosomal screening of embryos (CCS) and PGD (pregenetic diagnosis) for couples with previous abnormal babies. In vitro fertilization is extremely safe and effective process. The pregnancy rate by age is greater than that achieved with natural conception, although the rate of miscarriages with IVF pregnancies is almost the same as those conceived naturally.

How IVF works:

First, fertility medications in the form of hormonal injections are given to stimulate the ovaries to produce more number of eggs. A personalized stimulation protocol is developed for each patient based on the woman’s age, past history and results of both hormonal tests and ultrasound reports. The patient is monitored carefully with serial ultrasound examinations and blood tests.

When the follicles reach 18-20mm, eggs are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia/sedation in which a needle is inserted through the vagina into the ovary under direct ultrasound guidance. The follicular fluid is aspirated, which is then examined by skilled embryologists to isolate the eggs.

A Semen sample is collected from the Male partner, sperms are separated from the semen by special technique and washing with a media in a laboratory. In conventional IVF techniques, a specific concentration of washed sperm is allowed to fertilize the eggs. In other situations, a single sperm is injected into each egg through a procedure called ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) which is done under highly magnified micromanipulator.

Fertilization can be documented after approximately 18 hours, Embryos are then incubated and allowed to develop in specified culture medium in a tightly controlled laboratory environment for 3-5 days (blastocyst stage). At this point, agreed number of embryos are typically transferred into the woman’s uterus using a painless ultrasound guided procedure. Additional embryos are cryopreserved. The pregnancy test is done 9 to 11 days after the embryo transfer by a blood test.

The steps involved in an IVF treatment cycle include controlled ovarian hyperstimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, embryo culture, embryo transfer, and embryo freezing or cryopreservation.

Candidate:

While it may seem like everyone but you is able to conceive, there is a lot to the process of making a baby. It all starts with a healthy egg being able to connect with healthy sperm. Before an egg and sperm naturally become fertilized, the egg must be able to pass through the fallopian tubes unhindered to meet the sperm. For many women, this cannot happen because the egg is being blocked for one reason or another from travelling through the tubes.

Cost:

First, keep in mind that every baby born had a price tag of some amount associated with the prenatal care, birth, post natal, and newborn care. With that in mind, IVF treatment does have a higher financial cost than conceiving and birthing naturally. Though, compared to the rest of the world, Pune offers a substantial cost savings.
