Ovarian Reserve Testing can be a very handy and helpful tool in checking your Fertility Potential as well as for planning the right treatment for you now, or even in future by freezing the eggs now. Ovarian reserve testing evaluates several hormone levels between days 2, 3 or 4 of your menstrual cycle by doing a simple blood test.
The hormones evaluated are as follows:
FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone): releases from the pituitary gland in the brain and stimulates the ovary to recruit and mature an egg. High FSH levels can indicate that the hypothalamus and pituitary glands are working harder than normal due to a decrease in ovarian reserve (egg supply). FSH levels can vary from cycle to cycle, so at times need to be repeated.
LH (luteinising hormone): LH is also produced in the pituitary glands. A surge of the LH hormone indicates ovulation. The increased levels of LH provide final maturation to the egg within the follicle and set ovulation by releasing a mature egg.
